Berry Good
Jump to List
Clusters of bright berries (or drupes) add interest to a garden, and are the focal point of all the plants on this list.
The stunning berries of the American Beautyberry look unreal. It’s hard to imagine a purple like that occurring naturally.
Possumhaw Holly and Yaupon Holly provide dramatic winter color when there’s little else going on in the garden. Cedar waxwings and other birds appreciate the late winter food source as well.
Barbados Cherry and Pigeonberry have pretty flowers in addition to cherries and berries.
American Pokeweed is a personal favorite. It’s amusing to watch the mockingbirds and mourning doves trying to balance on its swaying branches as they gobble up the berries.
Not all berries are made for humans, and some of the ones on this list are toxic. Always grow with caution.
