Hummingbird Magnets

Tiny birds, big personalities — hummingbirds are fascinating creatures. Judging by their size, you’d think they’d be demure. But they’re fierce, sometimes vicious, and aggressively territorial1. I’ve had hummers come up and look me straight in the eye as I lumbered past while they were feeding.

Hummers need tubular flowers, and seem to show a preference for the color red2. In Austin, we have many lovely plants to choose from to attract these tough guys. Planting a diverse array of plants can help ensure that they have food sources throughout the year.
